Create a Color (Colour) Palette Inspired by Your Favorite Movie Scene (My Pick? The Substance)
I recently saw The Substance and it inspired me: not only its gut-punching storyline but also the 80/90s-inspired colors, the Kubrick-style long hallways, and the in-your-face close-ups. This body horror had me squirming uncomfortably, but I couldn't forget it.
Watch me steal Sue's myriad of pinks from the chicken drumstick butt-popping dance scene (spoiler alert!), from Hollywood Cerise and Cherry Blossom to an oldie but a goodie, Magenta.
Technical Stuff
I used Illustrator to create my palette. Use the eye dropper tool to select areas of interest and move it around until you land on a color you like. Sometimes using photographs or screen grabs produces a less vibrant color, so play around until you get one you are happy with.
Add each color to the palette.
Continue until you have six colors, some that contrast the others. You don't want them all to be too similar; otherwise, they won't work together. Later, you can refine them further when working with them.
Export the Colors as an ASE Adobe Swatch Exchange File to Use Across Programs
First, name the colors in the swatch palette.
Select the colors you want to make a palette from, then SAVE SWATCH LIBRARY AS ASE.
The ASE file is interchangeable and can be imported and used in other Adobe programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
